XTS in Hygienic Design

The new version of Beckhoff’s XTS industrial handling system, designed to meet official hygiene design standards, paves the way for new applications in the Pharma and Food sectors.

Beckhoff’s XTS Independent Trolley System offers remarkable advantages in terms of speed and precision  thanks to linear drive technology capable of overcoming  the mechanical and control limits  of the classic rotary motors.

The company introduces a new version that meets the requirements of Hygienic Design,  that proposes as an innovative solution to  meet the industry’s most stringent sanitary standards, for Pharma and Food first and foremost, which has always been looking for fast , accurate and reliable automation solutions.

The features of hygienic design
Made of stainless steel (AISI 316L), the XTS Hygienic Design version meets the IP69K standard, the highest degree of protection possible.Resistant to the aggression of all the most common chemical agents, it can be subjected to very demanding cleaning and sanitation cycles, even with high pressure cleaning devices. During the design phase, particular attention has been paid to the total elimination of undercuts or hidden edges.


All components are  hermetically sealed using a high quality elastic material.These features make XTS Hygienic Design compliant with EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group) specifications, enabling EL-Class 1 AUX certification of systems.

The platform pluspoints
Implemented with modules of different shapes (linear and curved stretches, also with different radii), XTS is an EtherCAT based mechatronic system that enables multiple sets of trolleys to be moved along the same path simultaneously and independently, each of which having acceleration/deceleration ramps and autonomous speeds.The innovative features of XTS have revolutionized the interpretation of motion control: the system can be considered as an integral part of the machine and no longer as separate automation.

Trolleys can be operated on an electric axis, with exceptional performance ensured by EtherCAT communication speed. Every 30 mm there is a motion sensor that, together with the coils, is subjected to a poll every 250 us.The system  has to  handle a considerable amount of data; the signals,  the absolute integrity of which is guaranteed, must be processed in real time every 3 meters. This requires the availability of a baud rate of about 80 Mbit/s, a value fully supported by the features of EtherCAT, the communication platform on which XTS was designed.
