Conai Prevention Call 2017

The new features of the fourth edition: the winners’ prize money has been increased to 400,000 euro, the Call also features new and innovative solutions compared to the most commonly used packaging for the same application; as well as the Conai Eco Tool, the analyses in the specific cases will also be subject to validation by a third party certification body. Registration is open until June 30.

Conai continues to “Think future” and this year too offers a series of initiatives to raise awareness among companies on the issue of reducing the environmental impact of packaging.
Among these, the Prevention Call that as before, in terms of methods and contents, gives an insightful view of the Italian national packaging industry, evermore involved in environmental protection in terms of shared responsibility.
As Walter Facciotto, General Manager of Conai was able to underline: «Prevention is the key to getting more efficient packaging and to reducing environmental impact. This is why we strongly believe in the Call, which we again present this year, providing additional resources to reward the research and development of our associate companies, be they packaging manufacturers or packaging users».
The prize money offered by Conai for the winning projects this year amounts to 400,000 euro (100,000 more than last year), 60,000 euros going to the most virtuous entries from each packaging material sector - steel, aluminium, paper, wood, plastic and glass - with 10,000 euros earmarked for the entry considered most significant from a technical/design point of view.
«Over the last three years, we have seen a net growth of entries as well as winning projects, demonstrating that environmental sustainability is turning into a real lever for competitive development».
88 projects were admitted to the 2016 edition of the Call, 74 of which received financial awards at the end of last November. The entries were from 67 companies and achieved a real reduction in the environmental impact of packaging in terms of CO2 emissions, power and water consumption.
While the criteria for judgment of entries has remained the same, the 2017 edition offers a series of new features, that have been summarized in the box above.

April 12 witnessed the start of the fourth 2017 edition of the Conai Prevention Call - To valorize the environmental sustainability of packaging, an initiative promoted by the Italian National Packaging Consortium and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, to award the most innovative packaging solutions and those with a reduced environmental impact, placed on the market in the period 2015-2016
• Entries are accepted up to June 30, 2017, subsequent to filling out the form available on website.
• All consortium member companies can take part who have reviewed their packaging in terms of innovation and environmental sustainability, acting on at least one of the following levers: reuse, saving of raw materials, optimization of logistics, facilitation of recycling activities, use of recycled materials, simplification of the packaging system and optimization of production processes.
• For the first time, as well as developments of existing projects, submissions may also include new solutions created from scratch that, based on the results of the Conai Eco Tool, have been shown to have less environmental impact than the packaging most commonly used for the same application.
• Both the Conai Eco Tool (which allows for simplified LCA analysis, calculating the effects of preventive measures implemented in terms of the saving of energy, water and reduction of CO2 emissions) as well as the analyses of the specific cases will be subject to validation by a third party certification body.
•  The prize money for the winning projects has been increased: having gone from the 300 thousand euros of 2016 to 400 thousand euros.

One can ….indeed one should take part
As indicated in the regulations of the Call for 2017, all packaging manufacturer or user companies who are part of the Conai consortium who have innovated their packaging, investing in activities of prevention in their packaging, reducing the environmental impact of the same.
Solutions that fall under the following instances may be submitted:
- packaging replacement; a “prior” version of the packaging should exist that is no longer in production (regarding producers) or that is no longer in use (regarding users) since it has been replaced with a “subsequent” version;
- realization of a new and innovative packaging compared to packaging commonly used for the same application.
In both cases the item must have been placed on the Italian market in 2015/2016 and cover at least one of the prevention criteria recommended and promoted by Conai (reuse, saving raw materials, optimization of logistics, facilitation of recycling activities, use of recycled materials, simplification of the packaging system and optimization of the production processes).

By way of example, here are some of the 2016 winning projects, that best illustrate these criteria.

Saving raw materials
Containment of the consumption of raw materials used in creating the packaging and consequent weight reduction, while retaining the same amount of product packed and the same performance.

Biochimica Spa, a manufacturer of household detergents, redesigned the packaging of Coop’s detergent for delicate fabrics with a view to reducing the environmental impact on several levels, also thanks to a more concentrated product.
The pack format was  increased in terms of number of washes, although the weight of the flacon was reduced by 35% and the weight of the cap by 23%.
The reduction in weight and volume also helped logistics, allowing an 8% increase of packs per pallet.
Conception or design of a packaging in order to perform, during its lifecycle, a minimum number of trips or rotations under the same purpose for which it was conceived.

Pallets - Nolpal Srl, Casadei Pallets Srl, Orogel SpA Consortium, Kimbo SpA, Cevico Group Soc. Coop Agricola
The “SharePal” project, created in 2015, offers an innovative approach to shared logistics. Nolpal purchased the pallet parks of its partners (Orogel SpA Consortium, Kimbo SpA, Cevico Group Soc. Coop Agricola). Thanks to the dialogue between three different supply chains, the number of trips of empty pallets was minimized. In addition, Nolpal and Casadei Pallets plan to recover the pallet parks of the various actors involved, placing those suited for interchange on the market while regenerating those no longer fit for use. Thanks to  the platform, the movement of each single pallet can also be tracked, allowing the documental and geo-localized monitoring of each single actor.


Using recycled material
Replacement of a part or all virgin raw material with recycled/recovered material (pre- and/or post-consumption) contributing to a reduction in the use of resources.

Constantly committed to reducing the environmental impact of packaging, Gianasso Srl intervened on the I Provenzali Organic Shampoo line in a number of ways: the packaging was  simplified through the elimination of the paper box; cap and bottle underwent weight reduction, with an overall 51% saving of resources; Lastly, the proportion of recycled material used in composing the bottle was increased by 50%, making  it 100% made from recycled material.


Optimization of production processes
Implementation of innovative packing production processes able to reduce energy consumption per unit  produced or to reduce production waste or, in general, to reduce the use of inputs in the production stage.

I.C.M. SpA- Industria Contenitori Metallici innovated the production processes of tin cans in order to reduce waste and the environmental impact resulting from the same. Thanks to the scroll system, which allows a better exploitation of the tinplate sheet, the company reduced the production waste in making can bottoms by 37%.
Simplification of packaging system
Integration of multiple functions in a single packaging component, eliminating an element and thus simplifying the system.

With constant investment in projects that promote environmental sustainability of the pack used, Lindt & Sprüngli have completely revolutionized the packaging of the chocolate egg. Launched for the Easter campaign 2015, the packaging was renewed both externally and for the surprise inside: the weight of the surprise packaging was reduced by 97%, while the outer packaging was remodeled to weigh 21% less, although the egg size was increased by 11%. In addition, the egg support structure was also modified, eliminating the plastic support and going from a rigid shell to a flowpack.
Logistics optimization
Improvement of  storage and display operations, optimisation of loads on pallets and on means of transport and perfection of the relationship between primary secondary and tertiary packaging.
Car gaskets - Cooper Standard Automotive Italy SpA
To ship the automobile gaskets it produces, Cooper Standard Automotive Italy SpA uses sheets of cardboard and cardboard spacers between one sheet and the other. In order to optimize logistics and reduce the environmental impact of packaging and transport, the company reduced the height and weight of the spacers. In this way, in addition to obtaining a reduction in packaging weight, the gasket load was optimised, enabling the transport of an extra 50% of product. biochimica_web.jpg
Facilitating recycling activities
Simplification of the recovery and recycling of packaging, such as the separability of the various components (eg. labels, closures and dispensers, etc.).

Spinsanti Officine Grafiche Srl (ISO 14001: 2004) improved the environmental performance on paper for food use laminated to plastic film. “Cartamica” presents a substantial change in its composition, which facilitates its recyclability and compostability, maintaining its characteristics of water-repellency and resistance to fats. “Cartamica” does not contain any plastic. The overall weight was also reduced by 17%.
